Our Broad Branch Road Spring Neighborhood Lecture Series continues with the Geophysical Laboratory's <A HREF="https://legacy.gl.ciw.edu/static/users/tstrobel/laboratory.html" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tim Strobel</A>.  Strobel will present, "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: How High Pressure and Supercomputers Will Shape Materials of the Future," at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018, in the Greenewalt Lecture Hall. 
From stone to steel to silicon, materials shape the world in which we live. Nearly every aspect of our lives is governed by the availability of materials with specific properties, and new advanced materials are needed to address current societal issues. Using a combination of high-performance computation and advanced experimental synthesis, we now have unprecedented control over the design and fabrication of materials with application-specific properties. In this lecture, Dr. Strobel will provide an overview of recent discoveries – including new materials to revolutionize our use of solar energy and novel structures that are stronger than diamond – and will paint a picture of a new civilization era of materials by design.

Timothy A. Strobel’s research is centered on the synthesis and characterization of novel materials for energy and advanced applications. New materials are synthesized using unique pressure-temperature conditions and through innovative processing pathways. Strobel received his B.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2008) in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. In 2008 he joined the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution for Science as a Carnegie Postdoctoral Fellow and was appointed Staff Scientist in 2011.
