"Advancing Psychodynamic Psychology Through Mentorship, Scholarship, and Institutional Support: Lessons from the Marsha D. McCary Fund Grant"

McCary Fund Grant—advance psychodynamic psychology through faculty development, research innovation, and community-building. Participants will explore how structured mentorship and institutional support foster scholarly growth, sustain psychoanalytic traditions, and strengthen future generations of broadly yet distinctively psychodynamic educators and clinicians.
All past donors to the Fund are invited to attend for free. Registrants will be sent a Zoom link prior to the program.

Monique S. Bowen, Ph.D. (she/her), is a professor in the department of clinical psychology and core faculty in the PsyD Program at Antioch University New England. She is clinical faculty in the Couples Therapy Training and Education Program at the William Alanson White Institute. Dr. Bowen is an American Psychological Association (APA) Representative to the United Nations and serves on a number of affiliated global mental health committees. In 2019, she was named research fellow (inaugural cohort) to the College of Research Fellows of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA).
Leora Trub, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at Pace University’s doctoral program in School/Clinical-Child Psychology and a practicing clinical psychologist. Her research and writing focus on the ways that digital technology influences how people relate to themselves and others, including in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. She has published extensively on these and other topics in research, clinical, and psychoanalytic journals. She founded Academics for the Advancement of Psychodynamic Psychology in 2023, which is committed to reversing the sharp decline of psychoanalytic thinking in academic psychology programs.
Dennis Debiak, Psy.D., is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and is the Chair of McCary Fund Committee and He was the first chair of SPPP’s Committee on Sexualities and Gender Identities (SGI), a two-term board Secretary and President of the Division in 2017 and 2018. He is a founding board member and one of the first graduates of the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia (IRPP), where he serves as faculty, supervisor and analyst of candidates. He is the Director of Philadelphia-based Insight For All (IFA), which provides pro bono psychoanalytic treatment to formerly unhoused individuals.
This presentation examines how intentional mentorship, similar to targeted institutional support, can foster growth in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychology perspectives. Drawing upon the model and impact of the Marsha D. McCary Fund Grant, the session highlights how our initiative, a2p2 (Academics for the Advancement of Psychodynamic Psychology), has successfully begun to foster mentorship networks, early- and mid-career professional development, and research opportunities for emerging scholars in psychodynamic research traditions.
This program will explore how mentorship serves as a transformative agent, linking experienced clinicians and researchers with early-career professionals to sustain the vitality of the field. Case examples will illustrate how faculty recipients of the McCary Fund have developed innovative training programs, expanded research collaborations, and cultivated inclusive learning environments that uphold psychodynamic values while responding to contemporary academic and clinical demands.
Participants will engage with examples of how the Fund’s support has advanced key organizational goals: expanding psychodynamic scholarship, strengthening the mentorship pipeline, and enhancing access to high-quality psychodynamic training. Emphasis will be placed on how mentorship as praxis bridges the gap between theory and practice—demonstrating that the relational foundation of psychodynamic work can also serve as a model for academic collaboration, leadership development, and institutional sustainability.
The presentation will integrate discussion and participant Q&A, guiding attendees to identify practical strategies for replicating and expanding these mentorship and funding models in other institutions or professional settings.
