On September 15, 2024, the Dinner in the Meadow will commence at beautiful Meadow Lane Farm, in Louisburg, NC. The proceeds go towards the Leonard-Mobley Small Farm Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and cultivating small farms in North Carolina. Established in 2014, the Fund has been instrumental in aiding the development and long-term sustainability of small farms through an annual grants program.
The Fund is named in honor of two extraordinary North Carolina farmers, Marjorie Leonard and Jerry Stephen Mobley. Marjorie, a lifelong educator and advocate for equal rights, was passionate about fresh, local foods and the importance of local farms. Jerry, an agribusinessman and owner of Meadow Lane Farm, was dedicated to encouraging and guiding small farmers. Their shared vision and commitment to local agriculture continue to inspire the work of the Fund.
One of the Dinner in the Meadow's key initiatives is the selection of the annual Leonard-Mobley Small Farm Grant Winner. This year, we are excited to invite you to our 9th annual event, to be held on September 15, 2024. Hosted by WUNC's Frank Stasio, the event is a community meal enjoyed in the pastoral setting of Meadow Lane Farm in rural Franklin County, NC. We gather with old friends and make new ones, savoring dishes prepared by outstanding Triangle and regional chefs, created with ingredients sourced from local and regional farms and food artisans.
The Dinner in the Meadow is more than just a meal; it's a celebration of our local farming community and a fundraiser for the Leonard-Mobley Small Farm Fund. Proceeds from the event support a small farm owner selected by the Fund, based on all applications received.
The Fund is currently accepting grant applications. A small farm, for the purpose of this grant, is typically the enterprise of one person or family, and the farmer must generate at least 50% of their personal income from the farm operation. The farm must have been in operation for at least two years by July 1, 2024. The grant, amounting to $5,000, is intended to improve the operations of the recipient farm to ensure its continuation and long-term success.
We encourage you to join us in our efforts to support small farms and farmers in North Carolina. Secure your tickets or table for the Dinner in the Meadow today, and help us continue the legacy of Marjorie Leonard and Jerry Stephen Mobley.
