About this event
Let's Code is a not-for-profit, community-volunteer staffed, STEM out reach group that offers near-free, community STEM workshops. Most of our events are hands-on, multi-hour, "come and do" workshops that we try to just break even on.
For our hardware workshops or events that need hardware support we keep and maintain couple of trunks full of Raspberry Pi computer kits, custom assembled arduino microcontroller kits, as well as wifi routers, cables, and more, totally $2-3k worth of inventory.
Our community of business sponsors such as TEKsystems, Apex, VT, RBTC, the CRC and others usually cover costs for pizza, snacks and drinks so that we can stay focused during our after-work workshops.. but we still have small financial needs to break even so that we can replace broken/missing parts, as well as continue to grow our hardware kit inventories. This is part of why we charge $5/participant. However we occasionally need to place large electronics/parts orders from China, so extra donations help keep us in the black.
Help By Donating Funds/Pizza, a Venue, or Your Time:
DONATE BY FUNDING: If you would like to donate financially to the cause, please use the "tickets" button on this page to do so. No we're not a 501(c)3, as that takes money and red tape to oversee, and we're not interested in accepting large, tax-free donations or messing with the IRS/auditing overheard. We just want to offer quick, easy, but highly technical STEM events within our community and around topics we're passionate about. So sorry.. no tax breaks. :(
If interested in any of the donation methods below, fill out this form ( www.tinyurl.com/lcbb-volunteer ) and/or emailing us at core(at)letscodeblacksburg.org with any questions.
DONATE BY PROVIDING A VENUE AND/OR PIZZA: If you work for a company that has a nice meeting room that can comfortably seat between 30-40 people, has guest wifi, a projector, tables/chairs and power for laptops, we would LOVE to talk to you about running a LCBB event at your venue! If your company just wants to back LCBB's efforts, delivering Pizza and bottled water to our evening workshops (usually costing between $140-150/event) is also a simple/easy way to connect with and support us.
DONATE YOUR TIME/EXPERIENCE: If you want to help by investing your time & expertise, we can use that too! We can't pull off these workshops without our technical TA helpers and fresh/new teachers & topics. By becoming a workshop TA helper or even teaching a Let's Code class on a topic you're passionate about, you can help-by-doing.. this is the most fun way of donating, we think.
If any of these (other than financial help) sound appealing, then fill out our donations form at www.tinyurl.com/lcbb-volunteer .
Types of Let'c Code Classes We Do/Need:
If helping as a TA helper or sniffing out possible teaching a workshop sounds interesting to you, we try to tailor or target our workshops to three general audience types:
- Kids Workshops (super simple grade school, beginner technical/middle school, and high school workshops)
- General Workshops (anyone in the community. kids, adults, students, parents, etc)
- Pro-Series Workshops (for professional developers, engineers, technologists)
LCBB Workshops can be anything STEM or technical in nature you're passionate about.. Hardware, software or any general Science, Technology, Engineering or Math related topic or your love (e.g. coding, web development, chemistry, network engineering, cybersecurity, 3D design/printing, ham radio, drones, etc).
If you're interested in doing a workshop for us, the only thing we insist on is that all material/code/handouts, etc you provide are published under an open source, "Creative Commons" (CC)(BY)(SA)[1] License.
Contact us at core(at)letscodeblacksburg.org with any related questions.
