Currently in California, over 84% of the nearly 150,000 individuals that are documented as gang members are people of color. The modern day practice of surveilling, tracking, and documenting of poor Black and Brown people is a criminalization of culture and a clear violation of basic civil rights. 
Pillars of the Community’s “Document Me” Conference is day of brainstorming and strategizing on how to fight this systematic injustice by the people closest to the pain.  The all day conference will be held on Saturday, August 5th in Southeast, San Diego. 
It is our hope to get personal experts at the table so that we can have an authentic and robust discussion about all the tools it takes to fight the devastating impacts of gang documentation, gang injunctions, and gang conspiracy laws. Our panels and break-out discussion topics will include the implementation of new legislation such as AB 2298, the criminilization of culture and narrative, creating accountability for law enforcement, and the power of Black/Brown unity.

This panel will talk about how the lived experiences of those documented as gang members contributed to the creation of a new piece of legislation, and how that legislation helps people today.

Criminalization of Culture: The “Justice” System’s Attack on Black & Brown Culture. How did what a person wears, how they speak, who they know, where they live, and what they listen to become reason to document them as a gang member? This panel will discuss why communities of colors’ cultures are such a threat and why it is so important to continue cultural traditions.

Black & Brown Unity: What Is It, How We Do It, and Why It Is Necessary? America has a long history of dividing and conquering, and continues to do so in poor communities of diverse people. This panel of Black and Brown leaders will discuss the potential of building power against the common enemy of white supremacy.

Human Consequences: How a Label Can Destroy Your Future. Criminal, felon, offender, parolee, gang member: these identifiers have real consequences. This breakout discussion will ask how these labels have negatively impacted your life and the life of our community.
