Documenting REST APIs

STC seeks to advance the arts and sciences of technical communication, promote awareness of the latest trends and technology in the field, and provide innovative services for the education and professional development of its members.The Society's diverse membership includes writers, editors, illustrators, printers, publishers, educators, students, engineers, and scientists employed in a variety of technological fields. With more than 11,000 members worldwide, STC is the largest professional organization serving the technical communication profession.The Carolina Chapter currently serves more than 100 members in central North Carolina and the Foothills region of North and South Carolina. The chapter has won numerous STC community awards and was STC Community of the Year in 2015.

STC Carolina Chapter

Tech comm industry leader and blogger Tom Johnson will lead an immersive day-long course on writing documentation for REST APIs. Rather than focusing on abstract concepts, he will contextualize REST APIs with a direct, hands-on approach.
He will introduce learners to API documentation by working with a simple weather API and, in the process, help the group learn about endpoints, parameters, data types, authentication, curl, JSON, the command line, Chrome’s Developer Console, JavaScript, and more. By learning about these topics via a real scenario, learners will derive more meaning from the concepts they are exposed to.
The end of the course will cover standards, tools, and specifications for REST APIs. Specifically, Tom will discuss the required sections in API documentation, help the group analyze examples of REST API documentation from various companies, show learners how to join an open-source project to get experience, and more.
