ABOUT THE CLUB
If you love great documentaries and want to discuss them with others, we welcome you to our Club. We are a friendly, easy-going group who love to watch documentary films and talk about them. We strive to have engaging and intellectually stimulating discussions. We're here to learn, grow, broaden our horizons and connect with like-minded people. In 2025 we have some more great documentaries to watcha and discuss.
Our Docu Lovers Club will run monthly, online. It's open to all and you're welcome to join our sessions even if you haven't seen the film of the month.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The film of the month in May is Collective (2019). This Romanian documentary centers on the 2016 public health scandal in Romania following the deadly Colectiv nightclub fire. The film received acclaim from critics, as well as many accolades, including from the European Film Awards and the National Society of Film Critics. At the 93rd Academy Awards, Collective was nominated in both the Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film categories, becoming the first Romanian film to be nominated for an Academy Award.
About the film:
Director Alexander Nanau follows a number of key figures in the aftermath of the disaster, from the point where we learn that 37 of the injured died of bacterial infections in local hospitals. We hear from newspaper journalists who discover that the hospitals use diluted disinfectants, the minister of health in the temporary technocratic government, and the victims of a corrupt health care system in a dysfunctional state.
Nanau avoids sensation and remains detached from the powerful emotions that surround the story, exposing the grim face of the corruption that plagues his country all the more.
On October 30, 2015, a serious fire broke out at the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest. It was one of the worst disasters in recent Romanian history, with an initial 27 people killed and 180 injured. Within a few days, fierce protests erupted, leading to the resignation of the Social Democratic government.
