Recipe + Med diet principle

Then, we cook! In preparation for each class, you'll get a recipe with a prep list. We'll start the recipe and while things are simmering, sauteeing or roasting, we'll talk about our particular topic...

About this event

What if we've gotten nutrition wrong? Focusing on fads and restriction instead of the timeless principles of real food, prepared simply, and eaten in good company.

Doctor and the Chef is an experience created by a doctor with the heart of a chef. It's meant to:

  1. Make you a better and more confident cook
  2. Dispel the myths that keep you confused and paralyzed
  3. Remind you that food is meant to be pleasurable and enjoyed

Meet Dr. Antonella Aguilera-Ruiz, ND:

After finishing pre-med as an undergraduate, I almost became a chef. Ultimately, I decided to go to naturopathic medical school because I had an inkling it was easier to teach myself to cook than it was to be a doctor 😉. All through my training, tucked in my bag, along with books on physiology, was always a new cookbook or food focused book. I knew I wanted to change medicine and that nutrition and diet were missing pieces of our healthcare system.

Fast forward and after more than a decade in private practice and also having the opportunity to teach other clinicians the most up to date evidence on diet, I am more convinced than ever that nutrition has the ability to extend our lives and make the quality of those years better. BUT, we've also made it super complicated and lost the forest from the trees.

The Mediterranean diet principle | sugar, salt and alcohol

To date, the Mediterranean diet pattern is the most well researched dietary pattern and it's shown benefit for a wide breadth of conditions including cardiovascular health, arthritis, PCOS, and sleep apnea (to name a few!)

The blue print for our class is focusing in on one Mediterranean principle and bringing it alive with a seasonal recipe as well as educational material like how much sugar is too much, should I watch my salt and how should or can I frame alcohol? Yay or nay?

And because I LOVE to nerd out on nutrition research, we go deep into what does the science actually say about a given topic and how to adjust what we know to real life including other traditional diets, flavors and cultures.

The goal is for you to leave class inspired to cook for the decades to come because that's how diet changes your life. Not in one flash diet or one "healthy" meal, but day in and out, through birthdays and celebrations and the morning rush to slowly build and accrue benefit for years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to cook along?

Nope! Many people like to join from their own kitchen and cook along, but others find it's a lot to keep up with and enjoy watching and then know they can tackle the recipe at a later time.

Are the recipes vegan, gluten free, keto, or dairy free?

All recipes are gluten or dairy optional, so if you have a sensitivity or intolerance, you can make swaps. Remember, you're buying the grocery list so you can adjust as needed! However, the Mediterranean diet is not vegan nor keto, so the recipes are omnivorous and feature whole grains.

Will a recording be shared?

This is meant to be a LIVE experience and to promote interaction, so a recording is not routinely shared afterwards. Do note, that the class is recorded and is a resource for members of Dr. Antonella's private practice.
