EVENT UPDATE 3/21: !!!Moving to the Scheduled Rain Date!!! Join our durational storytelling session over boiling pots of maple sap on a spring afternoon. While boiling down the sap around a fire together, storytellers with a range of backgrounds and experiences will share their connection to the Maple tree and the forest. Members of the public are invited to join in with their own maple stories and to learn about the process of creating maple syrup. As we stir the pot together, we will boil down ideas and sap, creating syrup by the end of the day for all to enjoy. Honoring our deep and ongoing connection to land, invited storytellers include local indigenous leaders, tree researchers, artists, historians, maple farmers, food scientists and more. Participating storytellers include: <blockquote>Anna Davidson, Mike DeMunn (Onödowáʼga), Josh Dolan, Emma Gutierrez, Stephen Henhawk (Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ), Kelly Presutti, Michelle Seneca (Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ), Gabe Smith, and Alina Stelick</blockquote>A culinary experience uniquely indigenous to this land, maple syrup is also a cultural experience deeply rooted in indigenous knowledge. The Maple is a site of action, expression, conflict, and connection as we examine both the gifts of the tree alongside the legacies of colonization, Indigenous land di spossession, and cultural resilience. While honoring the thousands of years in which Maples have provided syrup to people in this region, this participatory event invites our collective honoring of all things Maple. The Storied Maple is shifting to SUNDAY!With the forecasted wintry mix on Saturday, my team has opted to move the date to Sunday, which will be both warmer and sunnier! What is the event?A collective maple sugaring project, The Storied Maple invites community members to boil down maple sap to syrup alongside food scientists, art historians, foresters, indigenous storytellers, and others with unique insight into this important tree. While stirring the pot over a fire outside, a few hours of conversation will allow this cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary community to boil down ideas through fireside storytelling. Is this right for me? Do I have to join for three hours?For those who are curious to learn more about the maple tree and the maple sugaring process, who love the woods, who want to connect to local foodways and culture, or who are looking for a family-friendly outdoor gathering, this event is for you!The Storied Maple is family-friendly and has an open-house style, so you can come and go as you please.The event will be followed by a community potluck at Soil Factory at 6 PM on Saturday, March 23. Stick around to eat some fresh syrup!
