  • Event lasts 1 hour

Get live demonstrations and instruction. Learn how to upcycle your clothing with embroidery embellishments and Sashiko, a form of visible repair developed in Japan that is practical and decorative. Bring a piece of clothing to work on or use sample supplies provided (while they last) to begin learning these techniques. Demonstration, instruction, and sample supplies are free. Donations are accepted to make our historic building wheelchair accessible. Arrive at 11:30 and bring food to share if you want to join our potluck meal. This is just one of our events celebrating the 140th anniversary of our building. See the full year of free activities on 4th Sundays of every month through April 2026 at https://tinyurl.com/140th. Worshiping with us at 10am is totally optional (How We Worship). Join any or all activities today.

Frequently asked questions

How do Quakers worship?

We worship by gathering in silence and expectant waiting, without prearranged singing, prayers, or sermon. We have no minister and believe the Light is directly available to all. We wait and listen together in silence. Read more at https://www.sanjosefriends.org/how-we-worship/

Do I have to worship with you to attend the afternoon activities?

No. Visitors are welcome to any of the day's events. But if you plan to join us for the potluck meal, please bring a dish to share.

What is a potluck meal?

Potlucks are meals where the attendees bring food to share. Each dish should be large enough to be shared among a number of guests, 7-8 servings or more. Guests may bring any form of food, homemade or store-bought, ranging from the main course to desserts to salads.

How should I dress to attend?

Quakers today do not pay much attention to dress. We no longer wear "plain dress" and broad-brimmed hats and bonnets. We dress for comfort, not fashion, and suggest you do as well. We avoid "fast fashion," mindful of its environmental toll and the added burden to many in the world.

Is there a charge for attending this event?

No. There is no admission fee. We always accept donations, and especially welcome donations to meet our fundraising goal to make our historic building wheelchair accessible. Learn more about that at https://www.sanjosefriends.org/wheelchair-accessibility/
