DIY Mending - June

DIY Mending - June

Leaven Community CenterPortland, OR
Overview

Join us for personalized advice and hands-on help with mending your treasured textiles!

Bring your mending projects for one-on-one repair advice and guidance. This small workshop will allow for plenty of hands-on help from a pro-sewist Margo, a specialist in outdoor gear & garment mending.

You may bring several mending projects to choose from. Mending projects for this workshop can include*:

  • Garments with tears, holes, or split seams
  • Bags with burst seams, holes or detached straps/hardware
  • Broken zippers and missing buttons or snaps
  • Patching and/or darning with visible or invisible mending techniques
  • Outdoor gear such as tents, sleeping bags, and garments in need of repair or maintenance

Repair PDX will provide the following materials and equipment:

  • Basic thread and embroidery supplies (note: we have a limited supply of high-quality thread colors; if you have specific thread color requirements, we recommend bringing your own from a high quality brand such as Gutermann)
  • Various notions & basic sewing tools (some version of most everything you can find in a basic notions department at a sewing store). Please bring your own interfacing / batting / fusible tape if applicable.
  • Materials for heavier-duty hardware mends and replacements (webbing, buckles, fabric, d-rings, etc...)
  • A variety of fabrics for patches
  • Access to and advice on how to use our two home sewing machines

*Note: Depending on the complexity of the project(s), be aware that you may only be able to work on one item and you may not be able to fix everything. In those cases, Margo will give advice and refer you to additional resources.

Also, we are not set up to do clothing alterations or assist with new sewing projects. Please bring only used fabric items in need of repair.

Note on Sliding Scale Pricing:

Repair PDX seeks to both pay our instructors equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.

Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, reduced tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. Thus, we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. As such, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.

Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
