Write and test a series of distributed systems, from a simple echo server to a Strong Serializable transaction store.

This is a four-day online workshop for engineers who want to build a deeper understanding of distributed systems. We'll work together to write a simple echo server, a family of gossip-based broadcast systems, an eventually-consistent CRDT service, and a Strong-Serializable, transactional key-value store. Along the way we'll discuss tradeoffs between latency and throughput, use Lamport diagrams to understand bugs, and draw out consistency violations using network partitions. You'll build a stronger intuition for fault tolerance, error handling, and transactional anomalies.This class is all about collaborative programming, so attendance is limited to five people. Be prepared to write some basic Javascript in front of other participants, and to help them in turn. No browser or framework experience is required.We'll use Zoom for video chat, and share an editor using <a href="https://code.visualstudio.com/" title="https://code.visualstudio.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">VS Code</a>. Everyone will take turns writing, running, and discussing the systems we build. We'll run and test our programs using <a href="https://github.com/jepsen-io/maelstrom" title="https://github.com/jepsen-io/maelstrom" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Maelstrom</a>, a workbench based on the <a href="https://github.com/jepsen-io/jepsen" title="https://github.com/jepsen-io/jepsen" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jepsen testing library</a>.The workshop is held on four days: March 24th through 27th, 2025. Each day will run from 13:00 to 17:00 US Eastern (10:00 to 14:00 US Pacific). We'll take short breaks roughly every hour.This workshop is a companion to the <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/distributed-systems-fundamentals-registration-1269962525099?" title="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/distributed-systems-fundamentals-registration-1269962525099?" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Distributed Systems Fundamentals</a> class, which runs the previous week. Participation in that class is optional, but you should have a basic familiarity with distributed systems.
