Discrimination is a potent social determinant of mental health disparities. Discrimination refers to the unfair treatment of individuals due to their identity(ies) (e.g., race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability). Research has shown that experiences of discrimination are associated with a range of negative mental health outcomes, including onset of mental illness, greater severity of mental illness, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The next frontier in this research area is to develop effective interventions that address discrimination to reduce its impact on mental health disparities.

The goal of this 1-day workshop is to bring together a group of expert investigators, NIH staff, community members, and other interested parties to examine the current state of the science of discrimination and mental health disparities, and to identify research gaps and opportunities in (1) prevention and treatment intervention development, testing, and optimization and (2) implementation of evidence-based interventions that address the negative mental health effects of discrimination.

This workshop will be open to the public.
