Frosty Formulations and Science Communications
In this two-part Discover Science lecture, The Ice Cream Scientist™ Dr. Maya Warren shares the inside scoop on how her chemistry background paved the way to becoming an ice cream scientist and science communicator. Then, Page Buono, director of the featured Sci-On! Film Festival short finalist Frosty Formulations, will elaborate on the importance of creative science storytelling. Plus, watch the seven-minute short film and explore the surprising science behind one of the world’s favorite desserts – ice cream!
Dr. Maya Warren, The Ice Cream Scientist™, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Carleton College (Northfield, MN). She holds a PhD in Food Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she specialized in the microstructure, sensory properties, and behavioral aspects of frozen aerated desserts. Her passion for ice cream goes beyond academia — Dr. Maya has dedicated her life to mastering the science behind this beloved treat while exploring its cultural nuances across the globe. Dr. Maya gained international recognition as part of the winning duo, the #SweetScientists, on the 25th season of the Emmy Award-winning reality show The Amazing Race, alongside her friend and former lab mate, Dr. Amy DeJong. As the founder and owner of IC3 CRM CONSULTING LLC, Dr. Maya provides expert consulting in the art and science of frozen desserts. From developing innovative flavors and formulations to optimizing large-scale production processes, she delivers the perfect scoop every time.
Page Buono is a director, writer and producer at Day’s Edge, an award-winning production company that makes documentaries about science and nature. Page writes and produces for the Emmy-nominated PBS series, Human Footprint, and has directed and produced numerous short, educational science films for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. She was a 2021 Media Lab Fellow at the Jackson Wild Summit, and has her MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Arizona.
