Disco Ukulele Workshop & Jam Session

Born in Brunei and raised in Taiwan and Okinawa, Anne embraced music at a young age, traversing various instruments until she discovered the ukulele on Maui. She co-founded the Monument Concert Series in Utrecht, Netherlands while pursuing her music degree in composition and piano teaching diploma.

This unmissable event consists of two parts: learn the ukulele techniques in the workshop AND apply them in the discotheque (jam session) afterwards.

Ideally suited for more advanced ukulele players, this workshop demonstrates 1. syncopated strumming techniques (applicable to all genres of music!) 2. chords commonly used in disco and funk music and how to move them up and down the neck 3. techniques to make your playing sound funkier (slides, hammer-ons, muting; less is more) Songs include “Car Wash”, “Stayin’ Alive”, “Le Freak”, “Get Down On It”, “Play That Funky Music” Song sheets and other instructional material will be projected onto the white wall. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Nick Howarth, leader of the Strummerville Ukulele Club in Somerville, specializes in a unique genre--disco and funk music of the 70s and early 80s. In this action-packed two-hour workshop, Nick will share secrets of why the ukulele is perfect for playing disco songs that will get you up and dancing. ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Voted “dancing queen at sweet sixteen” Anne Ku has organized dance lessons and parties for her colleagues in Singapore and London. This is the first time she is organising one in Boston, in the same location where her ukulele group meets weekly. ABOUT THE VENUE: Historic Lower Mills is the southern part of Dorchester that borders Milton. Next to the Neponset River, the Walter Baker Building is within sight and walking distance of the Milton T station (which is a short ride on the Mattapan Trolley from Ashmont Station on the Red Line -- you do not pay extra for this ride).
