Disability Intersectionality Summit

The DPC has been promotinginclusion,independence,andempowermentby guiding the development of statewide policies which ensure that public programs and services enable people with disabilities to participate in the political, economic, and social mainstream of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 1995.As we have grown, we have moved to ensure that our advocacy efforts, especially those efforts concerning health care, are informed by our research efforts.  We seek to move beyond the emotional anecdotal evidence on which non-profits typically rely.  We work to ensure that our efforts are grounded in data.  Our advocates must possess the data that demonstrates a policy will reduce costs and amplify opportunities for people with disabilities."Without the DPC, the disability community would not be able to articulate our needs in a well-informed manner.  And I am positive that without our fierce advocacy, organizations would severely underfund the services our members need to live healthy and productive lives."  John E. The Disability Policy Consortium

<H2><STRONG>The Disability & Intersectionality Summit will feature disabled presenters of multiply oppressed identities to educate, share, and inform a community-wide audience of a lived intersectionality disability experience.  </STRONG>In the language of<SPAN CLASS="apple-converted-space"> </SPAN>intersectionality, it is the idea that forms of discrimination, marginalization, and inequality that should not be considered singly but as complex, with different forms compounding one another.</H2>
<H2><STRONG>The event will kick-off with Heather Watkins as our keynote speaker whose talk is entitled "Have Cane will Strut to the New Normalcy of Disability Activism." </STRONG></H2>
<H2><STRONG>This summit will encourage every level of disability activists, students, educators, and community members to raise the consciousness of our intersectional identities in all of our lives.   This Summit is hosted by the Disability Policy Consortium.</STRONG></H2>

<P>Heather will lead us in her own narrative and lived experiences of being a black disabled woman. Heather's own experiences of going from embarrassment to encompassing The New Normalcy of her disability, and disability activism will serve as the opening remarks of the inaugural Disability & Intersectionality Summit. Heather is a writer, disability advocate, mother, graduate of Emerson College, and resident of Boston, MA. Heather serves on the Board of Directors at the Disability Policy Consortium, and is a fierce voice among her Boston neighbors.
