Dining with Jane Austen

The Falmouth Museums on the Green, owned and operated by the Falmouth Historical Society, is a two-acre campus that has been serving the residents and visitors of Falmouth since 1900. One of the most popular sites in Falmouth for visitors, it contains the 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House—a magnificent Federalist-period residence with guided tours demonstrating what life was like for an affluent physician in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the recently-restored 1730 Conant House—used for exhibits, research and genealogy studies; the Hallett Barn Visitors’ Center—rebuilt in 2002 on the site of an original barn and used a welcoming point for those coming to Falmouth as well as the “Whaling Wives Gift Shop”; the Colonial Gardens—showing off plantings, such as a boxwood tree, that go back to the days prior to the American Revolution; Memorial Park—a tranquil place of refuge that is open to all visitors looking for relaxation; and the recently-opened (2012) Cultural Center—a superb, 3600 square foot structure used for public and private programs and events, public restrooms, kitchen facilities, and as a repository for archival collections to preserve Falmouth’s past. It also has a series of rotating historical exhibits throughout the campus.

Thursday, January 25th 1pmThe family of Dr. Francis Wicks lived in the beautiful house on Falmouth’s town green (now owned by the Falmouth Historical Society) during the era English author Jane Austen (1775-1817) was writing her beloved novels. There were many similarities in to Austen’s England here in Falmouth from social graces, room usage, and architecture. This exciting virtual talk will focus on food history of the period.What’s a rout cake? Does Mr. Woodhouse like any food at all? What might Lady Catherine serve for dinner to her exalted guests? Fans of Jane Austen’s novels will appreciate this look into the dining styles of late 18th and early 19th century England. References to the novels will accompany this presentation of the dining styles of England’s late Georgian and Regency eras.$10 per person/$5 Members. Please note this talk will be virtual via Zoom. The zoom link will be sent out to ticket holders.Bio: Joyce is an independent consultant to historic museums and offers PowerPoint presentations on a variety of topics, writes articles for local publications, and is now creating historically accurate <a href="https://atasteofhistory.net/faux-food-shop" title="https://atasteofhistory.net/faux-food-shop" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">faux food </a>items of use at historic sites Joyce has a B.A. from William Smith College, an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State University, and has studied food history with leaders in the field at various historic sites in England and the US.
