Digital Project Planning
Advanced level digitization training for Utah institutions that care for historical records.
Ready to digitize your collection but not sure where to begin? Before putting anything on a scanner, there are many aspects of a digital project to consider. Successful digitization requires careful planning, clear documentation, and a well‑structured workflow. This advanced‑level workshop will introduce you to some essential foundational elements that must be in place before starting a digitization project.
Topics will include:
- Establishing intellectual and physical control over your collection
- Developing realistic timelines and work plans that align with staffing and resources
- Evaluating in‑house vs. outsourced digitization
- Creating descriptive metadata to support discovery and long‑term usability
- Planning for long-term preservation of digitized materials
- Providing access to digital collections
Prerequisite: Participants must have a solid understanding of archival principles and best practices. Completion of the State Archives’ Archives Fundamentals training—or an equivalent course—is required. Please complete this self‑assessment prior to registering: https://forms.gle/o6gSrDB15juicMcz5
This virtual training will be facilitated by Darcy Pumphrey, USHRAB member and Digital Assets Librarian at Utah State University. Attendance is limited to 25 participants; a waitlist will be available if the session fills up.
