Digital Event - Comedy of Errors

Speculative Drama aims to reclaim the relevance of myths, fairy tales, and classical texts through immersive, live theatrical performances. Our goal is to better reflect the diversity of the communities which we serve, and to show fellow people of marginalized identities that we, too, have a place in the classics. Through movement theatre, immersive staging, and site-specific production in an ongoing collaboration with local underground performance venue The Steep and Thorny Way to Heaven, we explore the intersection of classic stories and unconventional storytelling. Combining the principles of environmental theatre, rich and immersive soundscapes, and an extremely intimate setting, we create an atmosphere of inclusion and innovation while honoring and maintaining the original texts or source materials.

Speculative Drama

An immersive,queer production of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors featuring a primarily female cast and 90s inspired setting and costumes.

Queer love, mistaken identities, 90s fashion, and….Shakespeare? Yes, you read that right! Speculative Drama, known for immersive, inclusive Shakespeare presents Comedy of Errors: a slapstick farce involving misapprehension, manic buffoonery, and mix-ups, all painted against the backdrop of feuding small towns and lesbian love. This contemporary visualization of Shakespeare’s script with a predominantly female cast and set in a small queer community in a tiny coastal town, explores themes of lost (and found) family, situational comedy, and the pressures of being the “good queers”. All through some of Shakespeare’s best puns, pranks, and personalities! Featuring immersive staging, we place the audience right into the center of a world inspired by 90s sitcoms, Kevin Smith movies, and small-town politics as we follow the story of two sets of twins on a wacky adventure to discover one another: eventually. Comedy of Errors performs a live, immersive digital performance run for five shows in April in addition to our in person performances. These shows feature real-time performance aspects and unique immersive elements designed specifically for the digital platform.
