He is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. Mark was trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy in 2004. Since then, he has lead the development of three DBT programs for youth and their families and facilitated numerous multifamily DBT skills groups. He has provided numerous DBT workshops in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Mark lives in Chilliwack British Columbia with his four children and spouse.Mark uses didactic and experiential methods when he teaches workshops. He also blends humour and storytelling to create a fun, relaxed, and memorable learning experience.

DBT has proven to be effective for people experiencing the following issues:- Borderline Personality Disorder- Suicidal thinking or behaviour (i.e. suicide attempts)- Self-harming behaviours- Difficulties with anger- Problems with regulating emotions (such as intense sadness or recurrent fear)- Impulsive and engaging in high riskbehaviours (such as reckless driving,recurrent unsafe sex, etc.)- Difficulty building and maintaining healthy relationships- Feelings of emptiness- Persistent depressed mood with emotional dysregulation- Problems with alcohol &amp; drug use- Eating disordered behaviour, such as bingeing and purging

What is DBT?Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a treatment developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington. Initially intended to help people who had recurring thoughts of self-harming or suicide, DBT over time, has been adapted and used to help people with a variety of complex emotional problems, such as those with borderline personality disorder (BPD), people with eating or substance related disorders, suicidal adolescents, people struggling with treatment-resistant depression, challenges resulting from difficulties in regulating emotions etc. For over two decades, DBT has proven to be an effective evidence based treatment.DBT involves learning important new skills in the areas of managing your attention (mindfulness skills), managing and coping with your emotions (emotion regulation skills), dealing effectively with interpersonal situations (interpersonal effectiveness skills), and tolerating emotional distress (distress tolerance skills). DBT is underpinned by extensive research, that for people to build a better life and achieve desired goals, they need to make some important changes (such as reducing suicide attempts, self-injury, relationship problems, impulsive behaviour), and also need to learn to accept themselves.

Expected learning from this DBT training? Validation: What is validation? Validation and its dialectical balance with problem solving and change strategies.Linehan’s biopsychosocial model of BPD, implications of invalidating environment and creating a validating environment.Metaphors: How metaphors work, examples of metaphors, general priniciples of metaphors including visual ones. Relentless Problem Solving: Problem solving strategies, problem solving exercises, experience of problem solving.Contingency Management: Differential reinforcement, contingency management vs. conscious or unconscious motivations of client, behavioural analysis of self-harming behaviours/suicidal behaviours, chain and solution analysis.Emotion-regulation: Understanding and exercising emotion-regulation including interaction with biological elements such as; sleep, physical activity, physical limitation and circadian rhythm.Interpersonal Effectiveness: Understanding interpersonal effectiveness which is one of the key skills in DBT. Mindfulness: Description of mindfulness and the best purpose it fulfils, role of mindfulness in balancing the emotional mind with the reasonable mind to achieve the state of a wise mind.Distress Tolerance: Distraction behaviours which may be used to counter distress. Radical Distress Tolerance: doing nothing; an effective approach for many people and the rationale behind it.Walking the Middle Path: What this means and why it is important and some exrecises involved in practising it.Other DBT Skills: Managing competing priorities, life threatening vs. coping behaviours, therapy interfering behaviours and how to address them, behaviours interfering with quality of life and holding back from achieving the full benefits of DBT.
