Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Homestudy Course

18 CE Homestudy course taught by Dr. Emily Wharton

All registrants will receive 18 hours of course recordings. 18 CE Homestudy credits will be awarded upon completion of final quiz and course evaluation.


This intensive course:

-Teaches DBT interventions from each module (Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness)

-Presents history, theory, and model of DBT, applications of DBT to diverse diagnoses, populations, and settings.

-Includes experiential exercises, case examples, multimedia for applied, clinical learning.

-Discusses DBT conceptualization frameworks and how to provide DBT responsively with different presentations and populations.

-Prepares participants to provide DBT in a responsive, individualized manner, maintaining fidelity to DBT principles and practices.

Learning Objectives for 18 CE course:

1. Participants will describe the core tenets, principles, and underlying theory of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

2. Participants will explain how the DBT model fits the presentation of Borderline Personality Disorder.

3. Participants will illustrate how to incorporate cultural humility and responsiveness into DBT.

4. Participants will demonstrate chain analyses and solution analyses.

5. Participants will demonstrate how to present Wise Mind concept

6. Participants will define distress tolerance and its purpose.

7. Participants will explain core crisis survival skills

8. Participants will demonstrate how to incorporate distress tolerance skills into safety planning.

9. Participants will describe the interaction between radical acceptance and racism/bigotry.

10. Participants will explain function of emotions and role of emotion regulation.

11. Participants will explain how to incorporate values work into therapy.

12. Participants will demonstrate how to create a Cope Ahead Plan.

13. Participants will list of cultural considerations for teaching interpersonal effectiveness skills.

14. Participants will identify target behaviors and how to incorporate them on a diary card.

15. Participants will distinguish the three levels of treatment targets and how to prioritize them.

16. Participants will list strategies for managing potential suicidality or self-harm in a client.

17. Participants will demonstrate how to case conceptualize through a DBT frame.

18. Participants will explain the applicability of DBT to specific presentations, such as PTSD, SUD, and eating disorders.



Continuing Education Information

A quiz for Homestudy credit will be available after completing viewing. 18 Continuing Education Homestudy Credits will be awarded upon completion of course content, evaluation, and course quiz. 75% passing score is needed on course quiz to receive CE credits; participants may retake quiz an unlimited number of times until passing.

CE credits for psychologists are provided by the Spiritual Competency Academy (SCA), which is co-sponsoring this program. The SCA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SCA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE credits for LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFT license renewal for programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association. LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFTs, and other mental health professionals from states other than California need to check with their state licensing board as to whether or not they accept programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association.

SCA is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN Provider CEP16887) for licensed nurses in California. RNs must retain their certificate of attendance for 4 years after the course concludes.

Emily Wharton, Psy.D.

Dr. Emily Wharton is a Clinical Instructor at the Cognitive Behavior Institute, where she teaches courses in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Dr. Wharton has also served in roles of Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, and licensed clinical psychologist in the Palo Alto VA and her private practice. She has provided supervision and training for VA and Stanford psychiatry residents, medical students, and psychology trainees in ACT, DBT, and MI. Dr. Wharton trained at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium, San Francisco VA, UCSF, and Palo Alto VA. Dr. Wharton has also served as the Member-At-Large Director for the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Wharton has given lectures and trainings for the Palo Alto VA, Stanford University, and the Association for Contextual and Behavioral Science. Dr. Wharton has published papers and book chapters on ACT for PTSD, ACT for moral injury, mindfulness practices for anxiety disorders, and group trauma-focused CBT for parents of preterm infants.
