The Migration Summit is a month-long global convening designed tobuild bridgesbetween diverse communities of displaced learners, universities, companies, nonprofits and NGOs, social enterprises, foundations, philanthropists, researchers, policymakers and employers around thekey challenges and opportunities for refugee and migrant communities.We are looking to activate and establish communities of practice to come together to create more inclusive, generative, and sustainable spaces for systemic collaboration. The Migration Summit centers the perspectives and experiences of refugees, migrants and displaced persons to co-create prototypes, proposals, and recommendations to advance pathways to learning, livelihood and dignity.

The Migration Summit in April 2023 will focus on the theme “Co-creating Pathways to Learning, Livelihood, and Dignity” through virtual and in-person events hosted by participating individuals and partners around the world.

<p>The mission of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster, including the climate crisis, to survive, recover and gain control over their future. The Digital Inclusion Program serves this mission by closing the digital divide for our clients. In the San Diego office, our program is co-created with our clients to identify gaps in learning, delivery and curriculum. As digital platforms increasingly become crucial in navigating the physical spaces of our daily lives, addressing digital divides and barriers are crucial to meet the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Digital Transformation strategy call for a reduction of barriers to digital inclusion. The digital divide described by Van Dijk (2020) impacts historically underrepresented groups, replicating social inequities that was amplified by the COVID-19 lockdown, highlighting the importance of a community centered approach to digital inclusion. Based of research conducted by Abeytia (2020, 2021, 2023), digital platforms can potentially limit the impact of barriers to workforce entry by providing an active means for refugees to self-integrate. IRC San Diego, over the last two years, developed an approach rooted in co-creation and participation by our clients to meet the Digital Transformation strategy and the UN’s sustainable development goals to identify basic skills required to promote digital inclusion of marginalized populations. IRC San Diego identified basic skills, through our digital skill assessment and intake process, to create a modular curriculum, for a diverse population. Additionally, our work found that any individual can face a disadvantage in accessing digital environments via lack of, 1) access to devices, 2) internet connection, and 3) digital skills, that necessitates a flexible framework that can serve a broad range of clients. This session will provide attendees with an overview of IRC’s Digital Inclusion Program’s co-creation approach in, 1) assessment, 2) design, 3) implementation and 4) measurement, as well as the importance of partnerships. The session will conclude with a conversation with present and former clients on their lived experiences around digital equity and inclusion. </p>
