Special Parent Advocacy Group was founded in 2011 by a parent of a special needs child.  She moved to Trenton, NJ in 2010 and transferred her child, age 6, into an urban school district. Her child was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 3. Nicole faced many challenges within the public school sector from the very beginning in regards to absent organization and inadequate services. She also observed that there was a huge lack in the services being provided to other children. In speaking with other parents she noticed that there were many parents who were unaware of their parental rights in special education. Nicole said, "Due to the lack of knowledge in special education laws there are many parents allowing the school district to dictate their child's Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P) year after year". She noticed that there was a boundless need for an advocacy group and took on the task of forming the NJ non-profit corporation Special Parent Advocacy Group.
SPAG now offers respite services for children with disabilities and community inclusion programming for adults with disabilities.  We also offer a summer camp for ages 3-21 to fill the gap between ESY and the new school year. SPAG was founded in Mercer County and later expanded to Bergen and Passaic Counties in 2016.  We now offer special needs afterschool programming, weekend recreational respite, and Adult Community Inclusion to Passaic, Bergen, and Mercer Counties.
