Hosted as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2024, this session combines insightful panel discussions, practical examples, and an interactive workshop designed to explore how AI can enhance daily tasks and decision-making across various sectors.Key topics include an introduction to AI concepts, real-world applications in both the private and public sectors, and a discussion on the ethical implications and regulations surrounding AI. Participants will also have the chance to engage in a hands-on exercise using ChatGPT, followed by a final discussion and networking opportunity.Whether you’re curious about AI or looking to understand its benefits and challenges, this event offers something for everyone.  INE: An overview by INE, explaining key AI fields (machine learning, deep learning, large language models) in accessible terms for a lay audience.

Introduction

Demonstration of common AI applications in everyday life.

Example 1 - Broad Use

Illustration of AI use cases within the private sector.

Example 2 - Private Sector

Exploration of how AI has been (or hasn’t been) adopted in the public sector.

Example 3 - Public Sector

Discussion on the ethical considerations of AI, its societal risks and benefits, and current UK regulations.

Ethical Implications and Regulations 

Break

Exercise with Participants 

Wrap-up discussion, gathering participant feedback on their challenges and experiences, and presenting the Data Network.
