Deliberate practice is a training method that involves role play, behavioral practice and simulation-based learning therapy techniques.

This training will provide deliberate practice exercises to help clinicians practice the fundamental skills of emotion-focused therapy (EFT) aimed at deepening, exploring and transforming emotion. DP-EFT skills include different forms of empathic responding such as empathic affirmation and empathic conjecture, building therapist self-awareness, exploratory questions, self-disclosure, repairing relationship ruptures, and skills related to EFT task set up. An explanation of deliberate practice and an overview of the skills will be provided. A large part of the training will be devoted to experiential role-playing scenarios in which groups of three trainees act as a client, therapist, and supervisor with each assuming all roles throughout the roleplay. Dr. Rhonda Goldman, an expert in EFT, with the help of trained EFT facilitators, will provide supervision of all roleplays. The specific skills that this workshop will focus on will be a) empathic conjecture and b) marker recognition and task set up. Empathic conjecture is a moment by moment response in which the therapist speculates at the edges of client&#x27;s presently felt experience, tenatively sharing, in a discovery oriented manner what they hear as just beyond current awareness but calling out for attention. The response attempts to foster client exploration by conjecturing, speculating, or “hunching” with clients about what might be beyond what the client is experiencing. The therapist is helping clients to symbolize new meaning or express that which is unexpressed. Conjectures are based on therapist inference based on the client’s present expressions in voice, face, and body. The marker-recognition and task set up skill is built to increase therapist&#x27;s confidence and competence in undertaking chairwork tasks in EFT. Chair work tasks are designed to promote emotional exploration and deepening at particular moments when emotional processing is broken down. Another outcome/goal is emotional transformation. A key aspect of EFT chair work tasks involve being able to hear and recognize markers that arise in-session, and respond with the initiation and set up of the corresponding task. Two major, active tasks in EFT involve the use of chairwork. One is the two-chair which involves dialgoues betwen different aspects of self, and the other is the empty chair which involves self-other dialogues with developmentally significant others. This workshop will train clinicians to be able to recognize markers corresponding to these two tasks, and practice initiating chair dialouges.
