Join the Stand Up Republic Foundation in Washington, DC on May 7th for an expert-led discussion on the disinformation crisis geared toward finding solutions to address its effects on politics, culture, and society. Disinformation is one of the major weapons modern authoritarians use against democratic societies. It is used to exacerbate existing political partisanship and tribalism, to create chaos in the information environment, to cast doubt on the existence of objective truth, and ultimately to discredit democracy as a viable form of government. In the past few years, we Americans have found ourselves vulnerable to this kind of manipulation from a variety of malign actors, both foreign and domestic. The lunch panel will feature four major contributors from the Defusing Disinfo project:Asha Rangappa - senior lecturer at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and former FBI special agentAmie Stepanovich - policy manager for Access Now, an advocacy group dedicated to an open and free InternetJustin Hendrix - executive director of NYC Media Lab and RLab, a center for research, entrepreneurship and education in virtual and augmented-reality, spatial computing and other emerging media technologiesAndy Carvin - senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and DFRLab, which specializes in monitoring and investigates disinformation campaigns across the InternetPanelists will discuss why we’re susceptible to disinformation, how it’s been weaponized, and how we might prepare our democracy for this new challenge.
