Groundwater Arts is a US-based artist collaborative committed to reenvisioning the arts field through a climate justice lens. Our decolonial approach is activated through the principles of a Green New Theatre (GNT), a movement-building document penned by Groundwater Arts in partnership with countless arts makers throughout the country. Our mission is to braid together new ideas, living knowledge, and immediate strategies to bring the arts and culture field to the decolonized and climate-just future faster. Like mangrove tree roots, we are adaptable, committed to protecting frontline communities, and ready to face the biggest challenges of our time.

So we know that colonization is a structure, not an event...so what do we do about it?

We understand the basic structures and systems of colonization. So now what do we do?Groundwater Arts’ new virtual workshop: Decolonizing Theatre in Practice builds upon knowledge created and shared in Decolonizing Theatre Basics. This workshop will be a generative space to discuss tactics and strategies of moving ourselves and our organizations towards decolonized practices while including passive activities, video, and discussions, to create radical access points for everyone of all levels to leave empowered. Prior attendance to Decolonizing Theatre Basics is not required, however a nuanced understanding of the structures of classic colonization, settler colonization, and neocolonialism is needed in order to participate meaningfully and understand fully. This workshop was created with theatre makers and industry in mind - but we welcome anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of colonization today! Groundwater Arts is a half-Indigenous, predominantly POC, fully women-led citizen artist collaborative with decades of shared experience in cultural producing. Groundwater Arts co-Founders: Annalisa Dias, Anna Lathrop, Ronee Penoi (Laguna Pueblo/Cherokee), and Tara Moses (Seminole/Mvskoke).
