What if talking about death didn't start with FEAR, but over a BEER? (or CIDER!)
✨Brewing Conversations Around Death✨
Death over Drafts is partnering with the Upper Catskill Natural Burial Association, Wayside Cider and death doula, Anne Ohman, in gathering our community to talk about death.
At Death Over Drafts events, we encourage meaningful connections and having FUN while de-stigmatizing talk about the inevitable. To brew up conversations, we will be breaking up into smaller groups and using thoughtfully-crafted, death-related + death-tangential conversation cards, created by Anne, to spark meaningful dialogues. There are a few deathy trivia cards amongst the decks, as well!
We are SO looking forward to enjoying Wayside's delicious craft ciders, local craft beers and yummy snacks while engaging in these absolutely necessary conversations with you. Thank you for choosing to break the taboo that surrounds talking about death.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Death over Drafts is a FREE event to attend.
- We are a safe and welcoming space for all.
- While we are a supportive community, it is important to know that we are NOT a death support or grief group.
- In this communal environment, we remind you to be responsible for your own engagement.
- If you are interested in learning more about natural burial and green cemeteries, you can access UCNBA's informational flyer HERE!
We are very excited to welcome you and share a collective "CHEERS!!"
Death Over Drafts History
Death over Drafts was founded in 2019 when Stefanie Elkins, along with Jill Schock*, hosted the first Crafting Your Narrative Happy Hour at the Reimagine Festival in Berkeley, CA. What began as a casual gathering over craft beer became a fresh approach to talking about life, death, and everything in between.
From that first “hoppy” success, Death over Drafts grew into both in-person and virtual gatherings designed to make conversations about death, dying, and grief more approachable and even enjoyable. When the pandemic halted live events, Stefanie pivoted to virtual happy hours via Zoom, inviting guest speakers and facilitating themed discussions that blended depth with humor. In 2023, Official Co-Crafters, aka Hosts, began facilitating DoD events in communities around the country and in Canada.
*Jill has since moved on from the project.
