Yet those cultural webs of meaning and practice are often at odds with the creators and owners of crucial digital technologies. For Big Tech, death is a big, big problem. Clio’s warmly invites you to join <a href="https://www.tamarakneese.com/" title="https://www.tamarakneese.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tamara Kneese</a>, author of Death Glitch, and <a href="https://dorothysantos.com/bio/" title="https://dorothysantos.com/bio/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dorothy Santos</a>, with an introduction by <a href="http://finnb.net/" title="http://finnb.net/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Finn Brunton</a>, for a conversation about this life-and-death tension. This event will also feature <a href="https://daniellebaskin.com/" title="https://daniellebaskin.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Danielle Baskin</a>, who will perform tarot readings for attendees before and after the discussion. Tamara Kneese is a writer, researcher, and organizer based in Oakland. She is the author of Death Glitch: How Techno-Solutionism Fails Us in This Life and Beyond (Yale University Press 2023). She is currently the Project Director of Data &amp; Society Research Institute's Algorithmic Impact Methods Lab and a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley's Center for Science, Technology, Medicine &amp; Society. Her work has been published in The Baffler, Wired, Slate, and The Verge. Dorothy R. Santos, Ph.D. (she/they) is a Filipino American storyteller, poet, artist, and scholar. She earned her Ph.D. in Film and Digital Media with a designated emphasis in Computational Media from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor for the Everett Program for Technology and Social Change in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Finn Brunton is a professor at UC Davis with appointments in Science and Technology Studies and Cinema and Digital Media. He is the author of Spam: A Shadow History of the Internet and Digital Cash: The Unknown History of the Anarchists, Technologists, and Utopians Who Created Cryptocurrency, and the co-author of Obfuscation: A User’s Guide for Privacy and Protest with Helen Nissenbaum, and Communication with Mercedes Bunz and Paula Bialski. Danielle Baskin is an interactive artist, technology builder, and ritual designer with works in The Science Museum of London and the Museo dei Tarocchi. Her work often features public spectacles and experimental divination like BART Basel and Smashomancy. She currently builds the virtual tarot platform <a href="https://moonlight.world/" title="https://moonlight.world/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Moonlight</a>, an online space for collaborative rituals, and previously ran Dialup, where she connected strangers in serendipitous phone calls.
