Dean's Invited Lecture: Virtual Baltimore

Global Obesity Prevention Center (GOPC) at Johns Hopkins

Bruce Y. Lee, MD, MBA, Executive Director of the Global Obesity Prevention Center (GOPC) at Johns Hopkins, will be giving a lecture called Virtual Baltimore: A New Frontier for Understanding and Controlling Non-communicable Diseases.
Virtual Baltimore was developed by the GOPC's Systems Science Core team.  Virtual Baltimore, also known as VPOP Baltimore, includes virtual representations of every relevant household, workplace, school, food source (e.g., carryouts, corner stores, supermarkets), and physical activity location (e.g., parks, courts, gyms) in that city.  The simulation model includes virtual representations of each person in city as well.  Each virtual person, like real people, has a variety of characteristics such as an age, gender, household assignment, race/ethnicity, BMI.  Each simulated day, each virtual person wakes up and then, like a real person, makes series of decisions throughout the day. 
Dr. Lee will discuss VPOP Baltimore and how it's used to better understand obesity and its complex system.
There will be a reception immediately following the lecture.
