Aperçu

Music by Benjamin Britten, and a conversation with director Jay Stull and choreographer Take Ueyama, curated by Mari Lee.

Shape of Becoming explores the influence of people in our lives on our sense of identity, and how they help (or hinder) us in finding our unique voices. A live performance of Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No. 2 will be the medium through which participants engage in personal exploration through deep listening activated by ritual and amplified by storytelling. The arc of the experience and the audience's self reflection and journey itself mirrors Britten’s own story of personal growth and transformation. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion on how we learn to find our unique selves, featuring members of our creative team – director Jay Stull and choreographer Take Ueyama.

Created by Mari Lee; Music by Benjamin Britten.

Performers: Claire Bourg, Mari Lee (violins), Laura Liu (viola), Josh Halpern (cello)

About Mari: Mari Lee is an artist dedicated to forging deep human connections through music. Praised as “extremely impressive” by the influential music magazine The Strad, Mari has performed as a violinist at such prestigious venues as the Wigmore Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall, as well as renowned festivals including Ravinia, Verbier, and Marlboro. Her Salon Séance has won Tarisio’s Young Artists Grants and the Britten-Pears Foundation’s Britten Award, and has been presented by Yellow Barn Festival, Schubert Club, and The Crypt Sessions, among others. Mari is an alumna of The Yehudi Menuhin School, New England Conservatory of Music, and Universität der Künste Berlin.

David's Place presents innovative, thought-provoking experiences at a private residence in Chelsea: jazz, broadly defined, in a series of not-for-profit events. It is not broadly advertised, but rather we suggest you bring friends. Eventbrite tickets required at the door - limited space.
