Event description

Description

Data visualization—the study of the visual representation of data—plays a crucial role in the work of researchers and analysts. Organizations tasked with producing, releasing, and analyzing large amounts of data can more effectively analyze and communicate their work by understanding how to better visualize their data. Often, however, visualizing research results is an after-thought, secondary to the analysis, which ultimately limits the effective relay of information.

This Data Visualization & Tableau full-day workshop provides an introduction to the field of data visualization and introductory instruction on how to create visualizations in the Tableau software tool.

The Morning: Introduction to Data Visualization

The morning session (9a-1230p) includes an overview of the field of data visualization, introductions to different graphic types and purposes, and an overview of best practices and strategies to creating effective visualization types. The session is a combination of lecture and small-group work. This is a computer-free session: You will not need a computer to conduct the exercises.

This morning workshop will be taught by Jonathan Schwabish, Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute and founder of PolicyViz. Dr. Schwabish is an economist, writer, teacher, and creator of policy-relevant data visualizations. He is considered a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in how researchers communicate their findings. His book Better Presentations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks helps people improve the way they prepare, design, and deliver data-rich content. He is on Twitter @jschwabish.

The Afternoon: Tableau Training

In the afternoon (130p-5p), attendees will learn how to create interactive data visualizations in the Tableau software tool. The Tableau training workshop includes sample data, exercise documentation (with answers), and final workbook. The format of the workshops includes, “follow along”, “do it yourself”, and group exercises.

The afternoon workshop will be taught by Brittany Fong, a leading voice in the data visualization community and a Tableau power user since 2012. She is the organizer of the the DC Tableau User Group, a co-organizer of the DC Data + Women group, and a Tableau User Group Ambassador (designation given by Tableau). She is on Twitter @BFongData.

What You Get

Attendees will receive copies of Dr. Schwabish's book, Better Presentations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks, the desktop Graphic Continuum data visualization library, and other handouts and resources. Morning and afternoon snacks are available; lunch is not provided.
