Design is a powerful tool to deliver socially-responsible innovation, by helping to identify and meet the needs, wants and reality of stakeholders in the wider society.Design Thinking approaches help to carefully consider the practical context, before attempting to solve a problem. Collaborative design helps to ensure that the voices of relevant stakeholders are heard and taken into consideration. Visual design is essential to translate knowledge and ideas into materials that are engaging and accessible to interact with, both within and outwith the University.We believe that combining our efforts will allow the St Andrews community to benefit more fully from the design expertise that is present here.Therefore, we aim to:gain insight into the types of design expertise that are present,determine what needs there are for skills sharing and knowledge exchange, andform a starting point for interdisciplinary collaborations that include design

Join us for a Design St Andrews summer meetup on Wednesday, August 14 at the School of Computer Science, Jack Cole building Room 1.33a (at the North Haugh) from 2 - 4pm. <A HREF="https://www.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk/directory/person?id=uh" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Uta Hinrichs</A> will give a hands-on workshop on how to represent data using physical materials.
Data physicalization is a way to encode data in form of physical artefacts and experiences. The workshop will provide a brief overview of opportunities and benefits of designing physical artifacts using data for engaging audiences (especially non-specialists) in data explorations and analysis.
This will be followed by a hands-on activity where participants are invited to work together in groups and create their own data physicalizations based on provided data sets. Participants will learn how to translate data into material forms and how materials may help engage people with data using in particular tactile senses.
