Data Analysis and Data Science in Python Workshop

Dr. Vinhthuy Phan currently serves as an associate professor, associate chair, and undergraduate coordinator in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Memphis.Dr. Phan joined the Department in Fall 2003 as an assistant professor. He was tenured and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in Fall 2009. Dr. Phan's research interest lies in the intersection of computer science and biological sciences. His recent work focuses on the analysis of microarray data, the design of synthetic genes, and the construction of large DNA sets suitable for large-scale DNA-based computing.At the University of Memphis, Dr. Phan has taught a variety of courses focusing on the design and analysis of algorithms and their applications to the fields of bioinformatics and bio-computing. For the past several years, he has chaired the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee to ensure the effective, practical education and training of computer science majors. He has also mentored many students, supervised the student ACM chapter, and been involved in various outreach activities to attract high-school students to computing.

This 3-day hands-on workshop is designed for scientists and working professionals who would like to learn programming for basic and intermediate large-scale data analysis. Participants will learn how to program in Python and how to write short programs to analyze data. Topics include: • Procedural programming in Python • Basic object-oriented programming in Python • Processing of text files and text analysis • Data analysis and visualization (Seaborn) • Machine learning with Pandas, Scikit-learn 
Note: attendees must bring their own laptops.
