A symposium  investigating the interpretation  and reception of the biblical figure of Daniel and its associated uses in Islamic contexts.

AboutCMCS Houston is proud to host its first symposium on &quot;Daniel, Islam, Apocalyptic&quot; in association with the Reading the Bible in the Context of Islam research project headed by Dr. Ida Glaser at CMCS Oxford. This symposium inaugurates the third Reading the Bible in the Context of Islam project with Routledge and will investigate the interpretation of the biblical book of Daniel, the reception of the character of Daniel and the use of associated apocalyptic material in Islamic contexts. This symposium is particularly concerned with how interpretations of of Daniel (and associated material) have affected Christian-Muslim relations throughout history and with consequent links between religious thought and public policy in today&#x27;s world. This is a working event, which means that the research presented here has the goal of being included in the edited volume Reading the Bible in the Context of Islam: Daniel, Islam, Apocalyptic from Routledge. To that end, the symposium will begin with the theme of Biblical Interpretation and Reception of Daniel in order to frame the importance of this conference. We will then have two subsequent sessions, each with their own break out working groups, to raise issues relating to Christian interpretation and uses of Daniel in Islamic Contexts. We will end with a presentation on contemporary receptions of apocalyptic literature as it pertains to Christian-Muslim relations in the United States today.
