Performance + Screening + Fashion Show
Catharine Clark Gallery, BOXBLUR, and the San Francisco Dance Film Festival present a new commissioned dance work by New York-based choreographer Catherine Galasso.
Galasso will present Dances for Doing, an original, site-specific dance featuring two distinct duets: one for longtime dancers and collaborators Karla Quintero and Phoenicia Pettyjohn, and another for dancers in training Galicia and Santiago Stack Lozano.
Galasso will employ the form of the duet to create intricate combinations of everyday gesture, resulting in otherworldly forms both familiar and strange that experiment with a range of scale, narrative, and architectural response.
Program includes "Finding Me," a screening of short dance films from San Francisco Dance Film Festival. Discover how dance unleashes new possibilities for fluid self-expression. Moving through sexuality, gender, and family relations, these international shorts deftly explore how identities can constrain but also release.
The evening concludes with a fashion show by Leilah Talukder. Her six piece collection and found object jewelry for the Open Field exhibition will be activated in the form of a fashion show on the evenings of June 26th and 27th.
Talukder's garments adopt the visual language of Anni Albers’ weaving practice, and translate them into functional forms. The isolation of the pandemic and Leilah’s surroundings in the Santa Cruz Mountains mirror the material constraints that the Black Mountain College artists experienced. As a designer and artist, she evaluated her participation in the fashion industry by experimenting with foraging, natural dyeing, and material gathering processes to evade the use of synthetic and industrially manufactured materials as much as possible. Leilah critiques the ways in which industry-made fashion has diminished our ability to appreciate handmade, slowly produced, and bespoke garments. The availability of fashion at an industrial scale has broadly reaching imperial, environmental, and culturally devastating impacts. Within a generation, sewing and garment making has been demoted and is no longer a life skill, dynamics that she actively explores in her practice.
