We're pleased to invite you to join us at The Land School on Friday, May 8, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM, as our creative partner, D-Composed welcomes Jlin to The Land School for a live set in our Auditorium.From 8 to 9 PM, D-Composed will perform the works of electronic composers, including works by pioneering composer Pamela Z, ensemble members' own compositions, and compositions by Jlin. From 9 to 10 PM, the night will culminate with a live set presented by Jlin.A math lover, former steel factory worker, Pulitzer Prize nominee, and proud resident of Gary, Indiana, Jlin (Jerrilynn Patton) has emerged as one of the most distinctive composers in America and one of the most influential voices in electronic music today. Her thrilling, emotional, and multidimensional compositions have earned her recognition as “one of the most forward-thinking contemporary composers in any genre” (Pitchfork).Jlin has collaborated with artists including William Basinski, Holly Herndon, the late SOPHIE, Björk, Max Richter, and Ben Frost. Her work has also been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, Third Coast Percussion, choreographers Wayne McGregor and Kyle Abraham, and fashion designer Rick Owens. In May 2025, she composed and premiered the first-ever piece of electronic music commissioned by the U.S. Library of Congress.Preceding Friday evening’s live set, we'll welcome Jlin to A Listening Space on Thursday, May 7 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM for a special guest selector session of Listening Hours. We encourage you to reserve your spot for both programs. Tickets are donation-based, and offered on a pay-what-you-can model. Every dollar directly supports artists and ongoing music programming at The Land School.__________About Jlin<a href="https://www.jlintheinnovator.com" title="https://www.jlintheinnovator.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jlin</a> (Jerrilynn Patton) has quickly become one of the most distinctive composers in America and one of the most influential women in electronic music. Jlin’s thrilling, emotional, and multidimensional compositions have earned her praise as “one of the most forward-thinking contemporary composers in any genre” (Pitchfork) and a 2023 United States Artist award. She was a 2023 Pulitzer Prize nominee for Perspectives – originally commissioned and performed by Third Coast Percussion. Her mini-album Perspective, featuring the original electronic versions of the suite, was released to critical acclaim on Planet Mu 2023. Her much-lauded albums Dark Energy (2015) and Black Origami (2017) have been featured in “Best of” lists in The New York Times, The Wire, LA Times, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and Vogue. She has remixed works for major artists including Björk, Max Richter, Martin Gore (of Depeche Mode), Galya Bisengalieva, Marie Davidson, Nina Kraviz and Ben Frost. Jlin has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, Third Coast Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, the Pathos Quartet, legendary choreographers Wayne McGregor &amp; Kyle Abraham, fashion designer Rick Owens and the visual artists Nick Cave and Kevin Beasley. Jlin has collaborated with contemporary artists including William Basinski, Dope Saint Jude, Holly Herndon, Zora Jones, and the late, iconic SOPHIE. Her latest album, Akoma (Planet Mu), was released in March 2024 and features collaborations with Philip Glass, Björk and Kronos Quartet. Led by their mission to uplift and empower society through the music of Black composers, this Chicago-based creative incubator serves as a bridge between the past and the present, connecting to the future of representation, music-centered experiences, and the communal power of Black composers and their lasting impact.
