As we age, we find that we are offered a wide variety of treatments, surgeries and practices to keep us from dying in the short term. We tend to seek cures (always a temporary fix). While there's nothing particularly wrong with that desire for cure, it can lead us into the illusion so persistent in this society, the illusion that we will live forever. The Christian understanding of healing is that it comprehends body, mind and spirit, and that it allows us to enter our dying with hope. Our time together will explore the difference between cure and healing, and will allow us to attend to our own fantasies in nonjudgmental ways. We will have time for quiet meditation, some journaling, a teaching and some small group interaction.
Presenter
Rev. Mary Earle is an Episcopal Priest, Author, Poet, Retreat Leader and Spiritual Director. Until her retirement, she taught classes in spirituality for the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Mary has authored ten books; the subjects include the spirituality of living with illness, rule of life, Celtic Christian spirituality, the Desert Mothers, and Julian of Norwich. Her latest is a book of her poetry, Did You Sing Your Song?
Mary has offered presentations and retreats in a variety of ecumenical settings. She also serves as faculty for the Forest Dweller program (spirituality for our “wisdom years”) offered by Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio.
Mary and her husband Doug (also an Episcopal priest) live in San Antonio, Texas with their border collie, Fiona, a cat named Xóchi, and lots of garden flora and fauna. Mary is also a knitter and weaver, so her office is full of skeins and balls of yarn. Their son Jason is a professor of French at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
Mary and Doug were numbered among the 2018 recipients of the Humanitarian Award from United Communities of San Antonio for their contributions to eliminating racism, prejudice and bullying and for their work to promote inclusiveness and diversity in the community. Her website is www.marycearle.com
This webinar is hosted by the OST Forest Dwelling Program which is a 2-year intensive formational program for people seeking to live into a mature spirituality. The Forest Dwelling Program offers a glimpse into themes of aging which are developed and harvested on the spiritual journey of an elder. This webinar will encourage you to explore ways of healing and being that can lead you deeper into the life of a spiritually mature and loving elder.
