ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This drawing workshop invites participants to compose playful patterns using a grid as a starting point, with the option to incorporate flora, text and collage. These elements are prevalent in the practices of co-facilitators Fiona Longhurst and Anna Finlayson.

Fiona will introduce her solo survey exhibition 5 7 3 Float Fall Petals 10 Trees, followed by a brief discussion with Anna exploring similarities between their artistic processes, with a focus on collage and the layering of motif.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Fiona Longhurst is an established artist whose work is characterised by a considered use of colour, intricate patterning, and layered compositional structures. Often incorporating hand-drawn text, her imagery reflects a dynamic interplay between gesture and control, density and space. Her practice draws affinities with the tradition of automatic drawing, allowing forms to unfold through fluid mark-making and sustained visual exploration.

Longhurst has worked at Arts Project Australia since 1991 and presented her first solo exhibition at Arts Projects Australia in 2019. Her work is held in the C.O.A Gallery in Montreal, Canada and in private collections throughout Australia.

Anna Finlayson’s art practice includes painting, drawing and sculpture and site-specific installation. Anna is proudly represented by Sarah Scout Presents, Melbourne and has exhibited widely, including six solo exhibitions with the gallery. Finlayson’s practice includes recent collaborative projects exploring large-scale applications of my work using industrial materials such as glass and textiles. Finlayson’s work is held in both public and private collections in Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria.

Anna’s recently completed a PhD titled the Unstill Life, proposes a methodology for drawing that brings together the observation and representation of objects fundamental to still life and the gestural qualities of artists’ working drawings.
