About this event

Is this for me?

This event is geared towards people who have never climbed before, haven't climbed in a long time, and experienced, belay-certified climbers who like to help others have a great first or return experience. It's also great for experienced climbers who are new to NYC and are looking to connect with others.

CRUX events are non-competitive and for all body shapes/sizes.

Venue: Movement LIC (formally The Cliffs LIC)

You will need to fill out the gym's waiver for your first visit. Do so ahead of time here: https://thecliffsclimbing.com/participantagreement.

When you arrive at the front desk, let the staff know that you are here for the CRUX event and whether you need rental gear. They will point you to the CRUX hosts.

Accessibility

The main climbing area is on the ground floor. The second level bouldering and workout areas have stairs.

Changing Rooms & Lockers

There are gendered locker rooms with restrooms. You are welcome to use the locker room of your preference. Bring your own lock for valuables or you can rent them from the front desk. Cubbyholes for stashing non-valuables are throughout the climbing areas. There is also a non-gendered changing room in the retail merchandising area.

Cost

  • $15 for a facility day pass which includes rental gear (shoes and harness). You will pay this directly to Movement when you check in at the front desk.
  • Please email info@climbcrux.org if you need financial assistance to attend.
  • Movement Gym Members: Just scan your Movement membership card or use a punch card. There are no additional costs to attend our event.

Event Flow

  • CRUX event hosts will be milling about the couches behind the snack stand. You should see a large banner and LGBTQIA flags. Hosts will be the person who looks like they know what's going on :) You'll usually see them greeting others and handing out nametags.
  • Intros, icebreakers, and climbing from 6:30 – 9:00(ish) PM. Some members climb later and do workouts/stretches afterwards, so ask around if you're a nightowl!
  • Food, drink, socializing after 9:00 PM – After climbing a group usually heads to a local restaurant/bar for dinner and chit-chat. Hosts will spread the word on the post-climb spot, but if you don't hear just ask a fellow CRUXer or the event host.

We're going to have a ton of fun! See you at Movement LIC every third Friday!

Frequently asked questions

I'm part of an organization that would like to bring a group. Can we all register?

Before registering, please contact info@climbcrux.org with info about your group. This gives us an opportunity to determine whether we can accommodate everyone.

What to wear: HAIR, NAILS

Hair: However you want. Nails: We live for the clack-clack of a long nail. Just keep in mind that gym walls are rough enough to chip your fresh coat and pop off acrylics. Gel is more resilient.

What to wear: CLOTHING

Tight or loose, you'll want clothing that supports movement and flexibility. If wearing a skirt is important to you, you might want to accompany them with tights, leggings, or bike shorts. Rental shoes are disinfected, but you'll want to wear socks anyway. Thinner is better.

What to wear: BINDING, TUCKING

Binding: Try for the largest size / loosest fitting as you're comfortable with. Tucking: While bouldering you are more likely to make wider lateral movements. Harnesses create a diamond shape in the crotch when weighted. Compression underwear and dark clothing can minimize visibility.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No. However, evenings get crowded in the after-work peak and is not the best time for small children new to a dynamic event space. All minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. CRUX is not a camp or drop-off program.
