Crowdsourcing Biomedical Research

Dr Helen Spiers is Biomedical Research Lead of the Zooniverse, the world’s largest and most popular platform for online citizen science. Based across The Francis Crick Institute and the University of Oxford, Dr Spiers manages the development of novel biomedical citizen science projects, analyses meta-data produced by the Zooniverse platform, and applies citizen science to advance electron micrograph segmentation approaches.Prior to her current role, she completed a PhD in developmental epigenetics at King’s College London after obtaining a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford.

A half-day symposium exploring how online citizen science can be applied to biomedical research.

Technological advances of the 21st century have revolutionized data generation capabilities across many biomedical research domains. However, methods to effectively analyse these data frequently remain antiquated in comparison. One innovative approach to effectively process data is to perform distributed data analysis through engaging large numbers of volunteers online via citizen science platforms, such as the Zooniverse (<A HREF="http://www.zooniverse.org" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.zooniverse.org</A>). This represents a type of crowdsourcing that harnesses the time, enthusiasm and pattern recognition abilities of volunteers to enable data analysis, and thus provides a means of facilitating research that would not be possible otherwise, while engaging the public in authentic research.
In this half-day symposium, we will hear from an expert panel who have been applying citizen science to a broad range of biomedical research questions;

This event is relevant to biomedical, medical, preclinical, clinical and health researchers at any stage of their career, as well as funders and policy makers. The programme will include talks from researchers leading citizen science projects with a biomedical focus, as well as a brief introduction to building an online citizen science project with the Zooniverse's Project Builder interface (https://www.zooniverse.org/lab)
