Crossing the Line

The Fresno Bee is the primary news source for the central San Joaquin Valley, covering a six-county area that is one of the fastest-growing regions in California.

Over the last few weeks, The Fresno Bee has faciliated a dialogue between Fresno residents living north and south of Shaw Avenue on topics such as public safety, health, education and more. The project was done in partnership with Arizona State University's News Co/Lab and Spaceship Media, a journalism organization that developed a “dialogue journalism” method to reduce polarization, build communities and restore trust in media. The goal of this project was to help people from different parts of the city understand each other better.
This process will culminate in a forum on Oct. 20 at Fresno City College, where residents who participated in the dialogue will discuss what they learned and how to move forward. The forum will be moderated by Jim Boren, The Bee's former executive editor who founded Fresno State's Institute for Media & Public Trust. Danielle Bergstrom, the founding director of Fresnoland, also will speak. Fresnoland is a policy and media lab working to bring independent research and storytelling on issues facing Fresno and the central San Joaquin Valley.
