Creative Writing Workshops for Educators

The 2016 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award is pleased to offer a special workshop on creative writing just for educators. Are you an educator struggling with teaching creative writing because it’s been years since you last sat down to unleash your own thoughts and stories on paper? 2016 Genre Excellence – Children’s Picture Book Author winner April Pulley Sayre, 2011 Regional Author winner Helen Frost and 2012 Regional Author Winner Barbara Shoup understand the difficulty in creatively teaching creative writing. Sayre, Frost and Shoup will bring their experience as both authors and educators to equip teachers with the tools and inspiration they need so they can get writing and encourage their students to do the same. Classes are free, but pre-registration is required. Certificates confirming professional development hours will be provided.

Wild Words: Growing Readers & Writers With Read Aloud for Pre-K and 1st Grade - taught by April Pulley Sayre: Early childhood is the time for word joy and absorbing voice and pre-writing patterns via read aloud. Taste read alouds about rain, snow, vultures, vegetables, and fish. Refresh your read aloud with techniques and extensions that carry books into writing, art, exercise, science.  Rev up your storytimes with behind-the-scenes info on the rain forest adventures and midwest garden goofiness of author/photo illustrator April Pulley Sayre’s 60 books.

Poetry Writing for the Elementary Crowd - taught by Helen Frost: In a poetry-writing workshop for teachers of grades 3-6, Helen Frost will encourage teachers to write poetry for the joy of writing as well as give some guidance in introducing poetry in the classroom.

Teaching Creative Writing to Secondary Students - taught by Barbara Shoup: This session with YA author Barbara Shoup will address the issues middle and high school teachers often face, both with students and administration, when introducing creative writing to the curriculum. Shoup will offer insight into the creative process, tips for generating lively writing, and a rationale for the use of creative writing illustrating how it fulfills state standards. Participants will engage in a series of writing exercises that they will find effective in their own classrooms.
