About this event

Creative Visions: A Celebration of Film and Art on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 6:00 P.M. This special event is an exclusive screening of the documentary Bar Daddy: The Al Jenkins Story, an Art Showcase, and a Bar Daddy Fundraiser.

Film Screening

BAR DADDY is a documentary that shares the story of Attorney Al Jenkins, who has dedicated his life to empowering Black law school graduates. Since 1976, Jenkins has tirelessly tutored over 3,000 aspiring attorneys, free of charge, helping them overcome the formidable California Bar exam. Through his unwavering commitment, Jenkins not only transforms lives but also challenges systemic barriers in the legal profession, inspiring a new generation of lawyers.

Currently, Al continues to passionately care about increasing the number of Black attorneys and works with law graduates, from his kitchen table, on the essay portion of the California Bar Exam - even into his eighties. Many of his former students are attorneys in the Bay Area.

Art Showcase

Rebecca Archer, an artist who practices law, will have her beautiful artwork on display for individual purchase at the event. https://artattorney.threadless.com/

Fundraiser

The proceeds of the fundraising portion of the event will go toward hiring a sound designer and colorist to complete the post-production stage of the film. The film will be used to discuss the obstacles and realities of bar exam preparation and passage for Black law school graduates.

This event is an opportunity to bring together community members, art enthusiasts, the legal community, and those interested in exposing Black youth to the legal profession. We are planning a Black Youth & Justice Symposium this September in Southern California. Bar Daddy Director Jay Gerren says, “I made this film so that I can inspire future generations of African Americans to become lawyers and judges.”
