Creative Tech Week presents FREE amazing workshops on 3D printing, generative graphics, Arduino, Raspberry pi, and recycled electronics on Saturday, May 13 at the Knockdown Center. Take a chance to attent workshops and the exhibition for free at the same day!

ARDUINO 101 by Farruk Zia and Lily Su     |     3 - 4:30pm

           A hands-on intro to basic electronics using Arduino. Each participant who brings a laptop will be able to work with an Arduino kit to create a basic music-playing project with sensor buttons and mini speakers. Depending on time available, more sensors, lights and other components may be set up. Also depending on available time frame, an intro to creating a case for your electronics board will be demonstrated via the free 3D modeling program TinkerCAD.
Requirements: Please be sure to bring a laptop with you, preferably running Windows (or Mac OS). You can take the electronics kit that you worked on in class for $20.            Have guidance getting started with electronics using Raspberry Pi Zero, a platform for making interactive electronics projects. With literacy of Raspberry Pi Zero, it enables one to use sensors, motors, LEDs and a range of devices to create. Raspberry Pi represents on of the best starting points for working with code. We will be giving a hands-on introduction where you will be able to assemble and program your own electronics projects. In this 90-minute workshop, we will talk about the considerations involved in creating an electronics project, how basic prototyping can be done with Raspberry Pi using Python programming language and advice for more advanced projects. Requirements: Please bring a laptop running Windows or MacOS to connect to the Raspberry Pi Zero kit. It is with a heavy heart that we dedicate this workshop to Ms. Aryuna Dashidorzhina, who passed away unexpectedly this April.  Aryuna was a dedicated creative technologist, artist and educator; a passionate supporter of women in technology; and originally scheduled to lead this workshop.  We will miss Aryuna's brains and creative spark in our community and at the Arts Hub.  May all those who knew her be comforted knowing that we plan to carry on her life's work at Creative Tech Week.

FREE RADIO STATIONS: Building the radioOrgan by Ed Bear     |     4:30 - 6:30pm

           The workshop will cover the basics of running a low-power radio station for art and fun, from the circuitry to the legal limits. At the conclusion of this two hour workshop every participant will have one hacked iTrip transmitter which is secretly a synthesizer!!! Surplus and discarded electronics are ubiquitous and ripe with creative applications. Griffin Electronics’ iTrip, for example, happens to be a compact, programmable radio station. The rapid versioning of Apple products and the company’s restrictive accessory policies have left almost every iteration of the iTrip obsolete and very cheap! This workshop is the first in a multi-part curriculum which develops the radioOrgan platform that redesigns the iTrip as creative and educational experiences. Material and tools presented in workshops later this summer will connect the iTrip to Ableton Live, Max/MXP, Processing, Unity3D, and more. Suggested donation for materials: $20.

COMPUTATIONAL AESTHETICS - Creating Your First Generative Art Work by Zhenzhen Qi.            |            1-3pm

Can computers think, imagine, and create? In this workshop, you will learn basic principles of Generative Art, and learn to use simple computer functions to create your own generative art, similar to the background image on this poster. This workshop is a partnership between Creative Tech Week (CTW2017), and the Creative Technology Curriculum(CTC) initiative in the Art and Art Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. It is taught by CTC Fellow, artist and educator Zhenzhen Qi. No prior computational art background is required. Please bring a laptop. The workshop is free to public.

3D THERAPY with the Lady Tech Guild              | All day

Are you an artist or designer looking to create a project using 3D modeling, scanning or printing? The <A HREF="http://www.ladytechguild.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lady Tech Guild</A> is a collective of women in the 3D industry. We specialize in consulting for artists, designers and businesses who want to get things made but are uncertain of where to start. For the weekend, we will hang out our shingle and provide free advice on anything to do with 3D. Whether you want to model and 3D print a lost earring, or 3D scan a maquette and then CNC mill a 20 foot high statue, we've got you covered. We will be 3D printing and scanning on-site too, so if you want a face scan or want to bring in an object to digitize, we can help. <A HREF="http://ladytechguild.com/members/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Our members</A> have decades of experience in 3D scanning, 3D modeling, and manufacturing using 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling and other means of digital fabrication. We also know just about everyone in the advanced manufacturing ecosystem in New York City, so if we can't help you, we can connect you to someone who can.
