PURPOSE: TO INCREASE YOUR CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE SKILLS
HOW: EACH GROUP WILL BEGIN WITH A 30 MINUTE PRESENTATION COVERING:
1) TO INCREASE CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE SKILLS UTILIZING A SOLUTION-ORIENTED AND
STRATEGIC PSYCHOTHERAPY FRAMEWORK.
2) TO LEARN HOW TO INITIALLY ENGAGE WITH CLIENTS IN THE BEGINNING AND ONGOING SESSIONS
OF THERAPY INCLUDING GOAL SETING AND How TO PROVIDE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS.
3) TO PROVIDE ETHICAL PARAMETERS OF THERAPY INCLUDING INFORMED CONSENT, PRIVACY
PRACTICES, ADDRESS ETHICAL DILEMMAS, AND APPROPRIATE BOUNDARIES IN THERAPY.
4) TO LEARN HOW THE THERAPIST IS AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT AND CHANGE AGENT IN THE THERAPY
PROCESS.
5) TO LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP RAPPORT WITH CLIENTS UTILIZING DIRECTIVE AND INDIRECTIVE)
COMMUNICATION.
6) TO LEARN HOW TO ADDRESS "RESISTANCE" IN THERAPY.
7) LEARN HOW TO ENGAGE AND UTILIZE THE CLIENTS' LANGUAGE IN THERAPY.
8) LEARN THE DIFFERENCE OF CONTENT AND PROCESS IN THERAPY AND HOW TO WORK WITH BOTH
SIMULTANEOUSLY
9) HOW TO ADDRESS AMBIGUITY AND AMBIVALENCE IN THE THERAPY PROCESS.
10) LEARN HOW TO MOTIVATE LOW OR UNMOTIVATED CLIENTS.

Following the 30-minute introductory presentation, there will be a 90-minute session that will include
participants presenting cases, discussing and learning to utilize a Solution-Oriented framework in their
own work.
 
Rob Smith is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He graduated from Washington University’s George
Warren Brown School of Social Work with the MSW in 1979. He has taken advanced training
in Solution-Oriented Therapy, Clinical Hypnosis, Strategic Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. He has worked
as a clinician, supervisor, and instructor.
