Creating Narrative-Driven Portraits

What transforms a portrait from a beautiful photograph into an image that feels like part of a larger story? In this full-day workshop, Meg Loeks will share her approach to creating narrative-driven portraits through intentional storytelling, light, color, styling, and composition. Meg will walk through how she develops an idea from its earliest starting point and builds the visual elements around it, from choosing a location and creating a color palette to styling, props, lighting, and the small details that help a photograph feel layered and purposeful.

The day will combine presentation, demonstration, hands-on shooting, and editing. Meg will demonstrate how she builds and lights a scene, including how she uses key, fill, and environmental light to create depth and guide the viewer through the frame. Attendees will then have the opportunity to photograph the styled setup and explore how changes in composition, perspective, light, and direction can create entirely different interpretations of the same scene.

The workshop will conclude with Meg walking through her post-processing workflow, showing how she refines color, light, and visual hierarchy while maintaining the atmosphere established in camera. Throughout the day, the emphasis will remain on the why behind each creative decision, giving attendees tools they can adapt to their own subjects, style, and voice rather than a formula to recreate Meg's work.
