Creating interactive data application with R-Shiny for beginners
Date and time
Description
R-Ladies Vancouver is a local chapter of R-Ladies, a global non-profit organization encouraging, inspiring and empowering females and non-binary people to become contributors and leaders in the R programming community (https://rladies.org/).
Join us for a 1.5-hour introductory workshop on how to turn R analysis into an interactive web application using R Shiny. Huge thanks to our members Akshi Chaudhary and Nazli Ozum Kafaee from UBC Masters of Data Science for preparing and leading the workshop.
What is R-Shiny and why learn it?
- Shiny is an R package that makes it easy to build interactive web apps straight from R.
- These apps are a powerful tool for communicating and sharing data to your stakeholders, research community or clients.
- Need some familiarity with R, but does not require knowledge of typical web development software such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript
- Would you like to learn how to create an online platform for your data to be explored interactively using RShiny? Join us!
Here's some examples of how RShiny is used:
- Environmental monitoring: https://kfrost.shinyapps.io/INmetals/
- Fish stock assessment app: https://gallery.shinyapps.io/lake_erie_fisheries_stock_assessment_app/
- Disease monitoring: https://gallery.shinyapps.io/CDCPlot/

Everyone is welcome to join our events and be a part of our mission to empower gender minorities with the skills and knowledge to code in one of the top programming language in data science, which is R. How can we attain this? By focusing our support and resources on this group during meetups, allowing their voices to be heard and when space is limited considering donating a spot to a female/non-binary members. We require our members to abide to the R-Ladies global Code of Conduct (https://github.com/rladies/starter-kit/wiki/Code-of-Conduct)
