Creating Committed Characters: Multi-Week Class

Overview

Build upon your foundational improv knowledge in this advanced class and commit to characters you didn’t know you could be!

Learn how to step outside of yourself and play someone else! In this class, improvisers will practice character generation and commitment skills using physicality, vocality and motivation in order to perform an original format, “The Funeral.”

Build upon your foundational improv knowledge in this advanced class and commit to characters you didn’t know you could be. Over six weeks, you will learn the fundamentals of character comedy through a combination of warm-ups, games, exercises, and practice scenes.

Schedule:

WEEK 1 (June 17th): Be somebody else! (Physicality/vocality)

WEEK 2 (June 24th): Commit to them! (Character commitment)

NO CLASS July 1st

WEEK 3 (July 8th): Make them think! (Living as the character)

WEEK 4 (July 15th): Come in! Get out! (Entrances/exits)

WEEK 5 (July 22nd): Working the Format

WEEK 6 (July 29th): Showcase rehearsal

WEEK 7 (August 5th): Showcase!

Prerequisites:

This class is recommended for improvisers who have taken Fundamentals of Improv Level 3, or equivalent training at another theater - email us if you have questions!

About your facilitator:

Hannah Alden Jeffrey (she/her) is a Baltimore-based comedian with glasses. She directs the monthly character show “Who Are These People?” at the Baltimore Improv Group and runs “The REALLY COOL Open Mic,” a show specifically for women and queer comics at Peabody Heights Brewery. Her solo show “Hannah LIVE: The One-Han Show” has delighted audiences across the country and performs regularly at Highwire Improv. Hannah dreams of becoming a crossing guard, and her favorite animal is the mighty manatee.
