Create your own silver ring workshop

The long awaited wax ring workshop is finally back and we cannot wait to see what you make. As a silversmith, Tara, the owner of beadandsip, will teach you the skills of creating your own jewellery in precious metals.

The workshop is 2.5 hours long, you will be guided from start to finish on how to create your own ring from wax. Sounds bizarre? Bare with us.

What is lost wax casting?

We will start by taking your ring size and then begin to hollow out the center of the wax tube to match your exact finger size. Once this is done, we will file and carve into the wax ring to create your design. You will be fully guided on this process and given guidance and techniques you can use.

Once we are finished creating our ring and the class is over, we take the piece away and work on casting it into sterling silver. We cast the piece by covering it in a liquid ceramic plaster. Once this plaster dries and hardens, it forms a solid shell around the wax. The shell is placed in a high-heat oven, which melts all the wax so it drains out. This leaves a perfectly detailed, hollow cavity on the inside of the hard shell. Molten liquid silver is then poured into the cast to create an exact replica of your wax ring, but in silver!
Lastly, we clean up the piece in our workshop by sanding and polishing to give it a mirror shine! The ring is then mailed directly to you and is yours to wear forever.

• Please note the class start time and arrive with plenty of time to spare.
• Students later than 15 minutes may be refused entry.
• Other previous metals such as 9k or 18k gold can be requested, this must be done in advance and will cost a considerable amount more due to the price of gold.
• All tools, materials and expertise are provided within the workshop. The teacher will guide you and advise you of what may or may not be possible when working with wax
• Please allow up to 2 weeks to receive the piece after the workshop
